About us

From little acorns – mighty oaks will grow!
That was the dream of Norman Sims some years ago when he envisaged developing an art club for the benefit of his art students and friends to meet and discuss the finer points of painting and sketching. During the Spring of 1995 he planted his ‘little acorn’ and the first official meeting of the newly formed Art Club was opened. Very soon a supporting group of people who were committed to sharing this dream, helped ‘plant’ the Birstall and District Art Society firmly on the map of North East Leicestershire.
The membership currently consists of just under 100 artists, together with six Honorary members, who have achieved this status by their dedication and service to the Society over a number of years. Our aim is to encourage artists of all abilities, from the complete beginner to those who have been painting since they were at school, together with Junior members who are still enjoying their schooldays. Society Rules limit membership to 100, but those interested can join our Waiting List.
Members enjoy a full programme of activities throughout the year and meet on a regular basis for Friday morning painting sessions at the Co-operative Sports and Social Club in Birstall. Demonstration Evenings are held on the second Tuesday of each month at the Palmer-Tomkinson Centre at Longslade Community College from 7.00 p.m. to 9.00 p.m., at which visitors are most welcome. The demonstrators are professional artists in various media and offer the audience the opportunity to see professionals at work, ask questions and gain useful tips on technique and materials.
Several one-day workshops are held throughout the year, when members benefit from one-to-one tuition from experts in their field. There are various outings to major art exhibitions at galleries in London and the Midlands, as well as an annual visit to the Patchings Art Fair in Nottinghamshire. A popular item on the calendar is the Painting ‘Long Weekend’ away at the end of each summer, which is attended by members and spouses.
The Annual Exhibition is held at the beginning of November. All members are invited to submit paintings for display and/or sale. Exhibits are divided into various categories judged by professional artists.
